Do I need a permit for a fence in Santa Ana?

Updated November 2026

For a front-yard fence, very likely: Santa Ana requires a permit for any front-yard fence over 18 inches tall. For a backyard fence within the height limits, often not. Pool barriers, retaining walls and powered gates bring their own permits. This reflects section 41-610 as of November 2026.

What needs a permit?

  • Any front-yard fence over 18 inches.
  • Pool barriers, which are inspected as part of the pool or as their own job.
  • Masonry and retaining walls beyond what the building code exempts.
  • Gate operators and the electrical work behind them.

What does the city look at?

Height, location relative to the property line and sidewalk, sight lines at driveways and corners, and the material. Bring a simple site plan and a photo of the yard.

Can I apply myself?

Owners can usually apply for work on their own home. When we build the fence, we pull the permit.

Who decides?

The City of Santa Ana Planning and Building Agency. Rules can change, especially while the zoning code update moves forward.
